Asta Vision’s real-time programme visibility transforms GMI Construction Group’s board-level decision making

Asta Vision

Award-winning UK contractor GMI Construction Group (GMI) has reduced project delays and improved delivery performance by connecting dynamic programme data from 20+ live construction sites through Asta Vision platform.

Moving from monthly spreadsheet reporting to real-time programme visibility has transformed board meetings and regional management of projects. Live progress tracking across design, procurement and construction enables earlier intervention for more efficient, cost-effective execution.

Asta Vision is a web-based portal designed to simplify complex construction project management, reporting and compliance, and mitigate risk.

Key benefits of deploying Asta Vision:

  • Board and management meetings now centred around real-time data
  • Clear visibility of design, procurement and construction phase performance
  • Easier to identify and address project delays before they escalate
  • Enhanced accountability through accurate, trustworthy data

From monthly reports to real-time insights

With more than 250 employees and 20 live construction sites at any given time, accurate programme visibility is critical to GMI’s delivery standards.

But before implementing Asta Vision, the company faced the challenge of managing this data across multiple systems and spreadsheets, with no consistent structure to the reporting process.

The time-consuming nature of collating information also meant that some reports were only produced on a monthly basis.

The transformation since implementing Asta Vision has been significant. Centralised planning and project management data from Asta Powerproject, along with data from other critical software systems, now pulls directly through to dynamic dashboards in Microsoft Power BI, providing a real-time progress snapshot across all projects.

“Asta Vision is crucial because we can connect directly to the database that holds all of our programme information, giving us a single version of the truth.”

James Murkin, Data & Reporting Lead, GMI Construction Group

Early warnings prevent costly setbacks

One of the most significant improvements is GMI’s ability to identify where project delays originate.

By breaking programmes into design, procurement and construction phases, project leaders can quickly pinpoint the source of any setbacks and take targeted action.

Stakeholders can also use Asta Vision’s dual view capability to analyse project progress in different ways. A ‘jagged line’ view shows which tasks have gained or lost time when compared to the original programme, while a ‘straight line’ view provides an accurate forecast of completion dates once the programme has been rescheduled.

The ability to toggle between these views enables the GMI team to track performance against the baseline and maintain realistic completion forecasts.

“We can take data snapshots and build a picture of how each programme has gained or lost time. This enables us to quickly identify and address issues before they become critical.”

GMI has also enhanced Asta Vision’s core functionality with in-house features that maximise the software’s value to their operation.

For example, the company uses automated text alerts to warn stakeholders when programme updates are delayed. These texts go directly to regional and senior management, ensuring swift action.

Transforming conversations with live data

Asta Vision has elevated senior leadership meetings from monthly reviews to dynamic decision-making sessions.

GMI previously relied on manually compiled reports, which were often outdated by the time they reached the boardroom, but meetings are now run using real-time Power BI dashboards.

This shift to live programme data means company leaders can now instantly drill down into performance across programmes and regions, enabling immediate discussion of emerging issues and collective decision-making on strategic actions.

“The increased visibility of data through dashboards drives conversations about project performance at all levels of the business.”

GMI’s innovative approach to project information – livestreaming through Asta Vision and other third-party systems to create a single source of truth – led to the company being shortlisted for two national awards in 2024.

Unlocking value at every level

Asta Vision’s ability to capture and present data is helping GMI make more informed decisions about future projects.

By analysing historical performance information, GMI can identify packages that consistently fall behind schedule and implement preventative measures before they affect future projects and incur additional costs.

The impact of Asta Vision extends far beyond data analysis, delivering tangible benefits to teams across GMI’s business.

From construction directors making strategic decisions to planners managing day-to-day updates, the software has transformed how different roles interact with project information:

“Asta Vision allows our teams to react to programme situations as they arise. It also allows our planners to review and provide independent assessments on the programme reporting from live projects regularly, avoiding the delay previously encountered in determining any inaccurate reporting, which led to unexpected programme failings.”

Jonathan Walsh, Construction Director, Midlands, GMI Construction Group

“We can track revisions and updates on the system and access files in real time. All new team members can access a template to get standardisation across the business, which is beneficial for GMI.”

Daniel Taylor, Senior Planner, Midlands, GMI Construction Group

Today’s insights drive tomorrow’s growth

GMI’s journey with Asta Vision demonstrates the transformative power of connecting programme data to strategic decision-making.

By creating a single source of trusted intelligence, GMI has established consistent standards for construction planning and can make insight-driven interventions at every level.

The company continues to push boundaries, with plans to harness Asta Vision’s capabilities for supply chain optimisation and resource planning, further enhancing its data-led approach to project delivery.
